Jiangxi Heavy Scrap Recycling Project: Q43L-10000 1000-Ton Gantry Shear for Mixed Heavy Steel Scrap

The Q43L-10000 gantry shear featured in this project was supplied to Jiangxi, China, for centralized processing of large and irregular ferrous scrap.

Scrap recyclers in the region commonly receive material from manufacturing, machining, construction dismantling and equipment recycling. The incoming scrap may include rebar, round steel, square steel, thick plate, structural sections and irregular dismantled components.

Before this material can be transported efficiently or supplied as furnace-ready scrap, it normally needs to be cut into shorter and more consistent sizes.

Relying mainly on small hydraulic shears or repeated pre-cutting can limit productivity. It may also require the material handler to reposition the scrap several times, increasing internal handling and delaying the overall process.

Two Main Challenges Faced by the Customer
Challenge One: Mixed Heavy Scrap Could Not Be Processed Efficiently by Smaller Equipment

The customer did not process one uniform material. Round bars, square steel, plates and irregular dismantling scrap could all enter the yard.

When the available shearing force is insufficient, the operation may face:

Challenge Two: Long and Bulky Scrap Required Excessive Handling

Long rebar, structural sections, plates and dismantled components require space for storage, turning and loading.

When the loading box is too small, the operator may have to pre-cut the material or repeatedly reposition it with a material handler. This increases internal movements and can leave the shear waiting for material.

The project therefore required both high shearing force and a sufficiently large loading chamber.

Our Solution

After reviewing the customer’s main materials and operating requirements, we manufactured and supplied the Q43L-10000 Guillotine Shear.

The machine uses two cutting cylinders with a combined nominal force of 10,000 kN, equivalent to approximately 1,000 tons. Its 8000×1800×900 mm loading room accepts long and bulky mixed scrap before the material is held, side-compressed and sheared.

The solution was not based only on increasing cutting force. The large loading room, holding system, side-compression system and wide blade opening were combined to improve the complete scrap-handling process.

Large Loading Room Reduces Pre-Processing

The 8,000 mm loading-room length can receive longer rebar, pipes, structural sections and plates, reducing the need to cut every piece before loading.

The 1,800 mm width and 900 mm loading height also provide a practical loading area for the material handler.

1,000-Ton Shearing Force for Heavy Scrap

The machine is equipped with two cutting cylinders, each rated at 5,000 kN, providing a total nominal force of 10,000 kN.

According to the supplied technical specification, when the material is positioned in the middle of the blade and all stated conditions are met, the reference cutting capacities include:

Holding and Side Compression Improve Feeding Stability

The shear is equipped with two holding cylinders, providing a total holding capacity of approximately 320 tons. Two side cylinders provide a total side-compression force of approximately 200 tons.

These mechanisms help control the material position, reduce movement of loose scrap and provide more stable feeding toward the blade.

Wide Cutting Mouth Supports Batch Processing

The machine has a cutting width of 1,800 mm and a minimum cutting mouth of 700 mm. This configuration supports the batch cutting of plate, structural sections and mixed ferrous scrap.

The reference cutting length is 500 mm, helping produce shorter material for transport, storage and furnace charging.

Designed for Batch Processing of Heavy Scrap

The customer needed to process more than light sheet scrap. The machine therefore required sufficient structural strength and cutting capacity.

The 1,000-ton shear provides a wider processing range for medium and heavy ferrous scrap, reducing the need to use different machines whenever the material mix changes.

Cooling System for Continuous Hydraulic Operation

Large gantry shears generate considerable heat during continuous operation.

This machine is equipped with an oil cooler, cooling tower and circulating water pump to help control hydraulic-oil temperature. Stable oil temperature supports hydraulic performance and reduces the influence of excessive heat on seals and hydraulic components.

The customer must still clean and inspect the cooling system according to ambient temperature, daily working hours and machine load.

The reference power supply is 380 V, three-phase and 50 Hz.
